I now own the HS8; used to own the HS7 which I think offered a more balanced sound signature in a smaller room. Upgrade to HS8 to get more bass and they did not disappoint: I use them for movie watching and music listening. They are great for watching movies in a 2.0 setup as the voicing is really good and the bass hits nice (I actually trim the bass down a bit). For listening to music, they are ok. That said, I've experimented with four speakers in a 2.0 setup and it is a killer setup (the other speakers are very good traditional stereo speakers set about 3 feet away across the front wall). I know a sub will go low, but these HS8 speakers step in nice and provide a nice wide soundstage with the other speakers, so in the end it is a 5 star rating. I also think the Class AB amplifiers in the HS7 and HS8 are superior to similarly priced Class D amplifiers in competitive offerings. One listen and I was hooked. I also found the HS7 and HS8 much better than the HS5 as there is more sound "there".

I didn't think it was possible to "fall in love" with what should only be a stupid pair of speakers but here I am. Those things are precise. The separation of everything is stunning. I'm hearing new things in the music that I knew and loved, but mostly from my own mixes! Even at low levels, which makes them easier to work with longer than what your doctor would allow. :)

Most people who first get into music production ask "what's the best budget studio monitor to buy?" Well, don't be a fool and waste money on KRK's like I did. These are not only your best entry monitor for the money, but they even stack up against a set of Mackie 824's we have at school for twice as much per monitor. The Yamaha HS8's are incredibly clear monitors with a phenomenal frequency response. Most pro studios all around the world have a set of Yamaha monitors in them because of the crystal clear sound and reliability. You can not go wrong with these monitors. They're a steal at around $1000 a set. The 8" Cone has a deep, punchy but not muddy bass response and you won't need to purchase a separate subwoofer to get accurate bass mixes in a home studio setting. I honestly could go on and on but I never fully heard good quality music until I got these. I want them in every room of my house now. You won't regret these monitors.

I woke up determined this morning. Nothing would stop me. This is pretty much my normal m.o. I had decided to treat myself to a newer and larger set of studio reference monitors - going from 5" to 8". Yes "bigger is better" (often). I quickly found out that this model of reference monitor is not only highly sought after, but also virtually impossible to source in Toronto. The Guelph L&M store had, what was probably the last set in Canada until Yamaha replenishes. Let's just say "Guelph was a fun drive" even though my EV hybrid depleted its battery and I had to burn some fossil fuel. Since learning a few new things around the the DAW (digital audio workstation) world and another birthday coming up, High Command (also known as the Chief Negotiating Officer), sanctioned this. Well, nothing like celebrating another rotation around the sun, with a lot of quality rock n' roll noise. It's also a good thing when your partner-in-antics and you, have been together for over 45 years 😀. My only negative point was that I ended up buying the shelf model at the published price. The Store could've given me a token discount considering I had to drive a 250 KM round trip to get them as I did not want to wait for them to be transferred to a closer store in Toronto.

I owned a pair of Focal Alpha 80 and used to love them. Unfortunately, I had to move on to another pair of monitors. I gave the HS8 a try... WOW! I was blown away. For substentialy less money than the Focals, the frequencies response is a lot flatter. Easier to place and set up. The stereo imaging (the Focals' strong point) is as good as the Focals'. Within few hours, I was mixing. And, these things are LOUD!!!!! Only downside, they need some good clean power source. Until I hooked them up in a filtered power line, I had some static noise problems... A good power conditionner solved the problem. Definitely worth every dollar...

I originally bought these for my studio when mixing our songs. I also purchased a Yamaha THR-10x because it had all the sounds I needed in a compact unit. The small speakers are good for practicing but thought I would put it through the Yamaha HS8's. Wow!!!!!!! The sound blew my mind. The speakers do not color the sound at all being studio monitors. The sound from the TRH-10x comes out pure just like Yamaha intended. I know it's a bit of overkill to buy them just for that purpose but if you have them already, I would suggest just using the headphone out into the monitors. I have a set of computer speakers on top of them plugged into my phone so all the sound comes in around ear level instead of coming from the floor from a typical amp with a much better sound. It sounds like I'm an extra guitarist with the band. It blends very nicely. Definitely worth it if you're fussy about your sound and have been going back and forth tone chasing. Now I can finally play and enjoy :)

I bought these HS8 monitors. They are great, very flat and clear, except for being noticeably light in the bass frequency range. However, this seems to only occur if they are in a treated studio environment. There is an easy remedy though; I added one of their HS8S subwoofer, that solved the problem. To get the speakers really flat; I used Sonarworks (now version 4) reference speaker calibration software. Also, I suggest it's a good idea to invest in some Iso-Acoustic Pucks, or stands, for your monitors. They really do work!

Purchased these for the home studio after a lot of research. I looked at far more expensive speakers, but the Yamaha reputation and sound fell right in line with my needs and budget. Unless you are willing to spend a lot more, I believe these will not disappoint. Software instruments, live, and recorded music sound great. I recommend adding the sub as well.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
