So, You Want to be a Race Captain? by Rob Corl
In case you have ever wondered what you would need to do if you volunteered to be a Race Captain, the following is a sample of typical club race preparations. A good motto to remember is that those who serve as race captains agree to be "the first to arrive at the race site and the last to leave."
- Volunteer at the club meeting to serve as Race Captain for any race you like.
- Contact the Race Director for permission to set-up the OCTC canopy.
- Make arrangements to pick-up the canopy, banner, table, chairs and the Race Captain’s box from the previous Race Captain.
- Note: the canopy is BIG and does not fit in the trunk of most midsize cars.
- On race day, arrive at the site early to set up the canopy and hang the banners.
- Recruiting assistance from fellow members is always a good idea.
- Have available the participant Sign-Up Sheet, Membership Flyers and the club promotional literature for perspective members. These items can be found in the Race Captain’s box along with pens, string, band aids, etc.
- Provide drinks and snacks for club members in attendance
- Expenses are reimbursed by the club treasurer for up to $25 with appropriate receipts.
- Write an article for the newsletter recounting the inspiring exploits of the day and everyone's finishing times. If available, include the race web site where the official results are posted. Send to the Editor before the 15th of the month at OCTCeditor@hotmail.com.
- E-mail the list of race participants to the Treasurer for inclusion in the Grand Prix point totals.
- At the next club meeting
- Give the Sign-Up Sheet to the Treasurer as back-up
- Give a brief report on the race
Remember, you are always guaranteed a PR day when you volunteer! |
